concept
Growing up, my Barbie dolls never had that big pink plastic three-story Dream House, identical to all their friends’. That was A-OK with me because I spent hours and hours pulling together stuff from around the house, yard and beyond, to create for them the best house EVER.
Today I design much the same way, by using a mixture of old and new, investment pieces and thrift store finds, modern and antique, sentimental and disposable.
I try to create surroundings that help you be, not seem.
The result, I hope, is authenticity.
inspiration
A long, long time ago, I enrolled in the best design school on Earth: Travel and Elle Décor. (and Dwell, AD, Domino, House Beautiful, Southern Accents, Veranda…)
My teachers were the best: “The Anns” of Holden & Dupuy, Rose Tarlow, Amelia Handegan, Jan Showers, Jonathan Adler, Bunny Mellon, Kelly Wearstler and yes, even a quick seminar class with Dorothy Draper.
Travel is the lifeline of all great inspiration. (I write these words on the beach in Tulum!) and I search out opportunities to be in awe-inspiring places as often as I can. Home is where my heart is, where my people are, but there is nothing like the feeling I get when I take the window seat and watch a whole new world come closer and closer into view.
The result is design that I hope reflects, but never copies, all that I’ve learned and seen over a half lifetime of living and learning.
what's next ...
Things just seem to evolve as they are supposed to, if you watch carefully and wait patiently.
I’m a hopeless dreamer. I’m always envisioning my own home, other dwellings and even my hometown, as they could be.
At middle age (and no, it doesn't hurt to say that!) I now have both the perspective of having half my life to learn from, and half my life to look forward to. That’s probably why I’m usually – but not always - drawn to older buildings , or at least the older part of town!
Vacation homes, of course are pure JOY to design. The “rules” are more flexible and there is always more leeway for a bit of whimsy. But I strive to make all of my projects, whether a vacation home, primary residence, restaurant, office, bar or hotel, just as rich, with a touch of JOY tucked into each room: book nooks, hammocks with views, patina’ed heirlooms, groupings of framed souvenirs…
Today top- notch design is readily available to anyone who walks into their local Target. The key to AUTHENTIC interior design is to elevate great design to another more personal level, one that I hope translates into true JOY for its inhabitants.
